Keeping students engaged during class is one of the most important tasks a teacher has. However, with new technologies and smartphones, it has become increasingly difficult.
Doug Duncan, a professor from the University of Colorado Boulder, found an effective method to limit cell phone use in the classroom. He told their students that if they turned their cell phones off and put them on their desks, they would automatically earn an extra point. It worked very well, as everyone did it and stayed focused.
On the other hand, Larry Rosen, psychologist and professor from California State University, had a different approach to this problem. Rosen confirms that most students get anxious if they don’t check their phones for over 15 minutes.
Knowing this, he established 1-minute tech breaks followed by 15 minutes of work and concentration. Over time, he started giving said breaks every 25-30 minutes. However, he wouldn’t ask his students to go for an entire hour without their phones, as this would have generated too much anxiety.
